Michellar’s "California Fields”: A Poignant Tribute to the Golden State
Artist Michellar draws down the ambivalence and emotion she feels for her home state of California in her new poignant single, "California Fields." Inspired by over twenty years spent in California, the song expresses her love, nostalgia as well as her deep concerns regarding California's climate change and the damn wildfires that have devastated the state.
Written originally as an acoustic song, "California Fields" came to life as a capricious Latin feeling song because of the creative collaboration with Lloyd Miller from Spirit Song Studios. The song is based around Michellar's penetrating and soaring vocals set on top of a beautiful, compelling melody.
Her lyrics are introspective, capturing the beauty of the valleys/foothills and the destruction of California both naturally and unnaturally. Stylistically, there is a nod to "Hotel California" by Kansas, and the song takes on a timeless quality while blending the lyricism of folk storytelling and elegant Latin sensations. Michellar's voice elicited feelings of sadness to strength. This song is much more than a song; it is a notion of acceptance of the negatives as well as an appreciation for life.
“California Fields” is Michellar’s first officially recorded studio experience, tracked at Women’s Audio Mission in San Francisco, and then mixed and mastered in Texas. Since then, Michellar has continued to discover new sounds and push creative limits. With a Latin-Inspired EP in the works, Michellar is stretchy her wings, which indicates she’s an artist who is going to evolve like a seed breaking through the hard ground to grow into something even better.
