Citizen:Kane’s Album "Blow": A Sonic Jazz-Inspired Odyssey

Lisbon-based producer Citizen:Kane (Marco Guerra) unveils Blow, his fourth studio album, a genre-fluid journey inspired by the sounds that shaped his electronic music sensibilities in the late ’90s and early 2000s. With influences ranging from Cujo to Zero DB, the eight-track album is a testament to his evolving artistry, melding jazz-inspired tones with techno, cosmic soundscapes, and unpredictable rhythmic patterns.

Blow resists the confines of any one style. It begins with "The Club," setting the stage with a pulsating yet ethereal beat, drawing listeners into its rhythmic core. Tracks like "Jam" and "Fluid" embody Citizen:Kane's knack for interweaving organic jazz elements with electronic textures, creating a sonic interplay that feels both nostalgic and contemporary.

"Peiote," for instance, exemplifies his ability to break rhythmically driven expectations, blending hypnotic beats with unpredictable rhythmic shifts reminiscent of Wolfgang Voigt’s experimental techno. Similarly, "The Fence" and "Montreal" juxtapose grounded beats with celestial melodies, bridging the physical and introspective in a uniquely balanced soundscape.

While jazz serves as an undercurrent, Blow stretches far beyond traditional interpretations. Its techno-inspired breaks and subtle electronic embellishments call back to Frank Zappa's experimental spirit and Uwe Schmidt's synthetic jazz. Each track captures a sense of exploration taking familiar forms and rearranging them, much like rearranging furniture in a room to create something fresh yet grounded.

The final track, "Family," stands out as a reflective synthesis of the album's themes. It captures moments of introspection and closure, layering poetic impressions over the preceding tracks. The subtle rigidity and apparent coldness throughout the album only deepen its emotional weight, offering listeners a more genuine and thought-provoking experience.

Produced and mixed by Marco Guerra, Blow benefits from João Melo's mastering expertise and a striking cover by Clothilde, designed by Studio Wawa. The attention to detail in every aspect of the album reflects Citizen:Kane’s dedication to pushing boundaries while honoring his roots.

Blow is not just an album, it’s an immersive experience. For fans of jazz, techno, or those seeking an unconventional musical journey, Citizen:Kane delivers a masterful blend of influences that feels both timeless and forward-thinking. Blow is an invitation to explore the intersections of music, memory, and emotion, a bold statement in modern electronic music.
