Haha Hear Hear’s “Demons Don’t Sleep”: A Gritty Dive into Dreamlike Chaos

Irish artist Haha Hear Hear, led by Derry-native Ruairí Connolly, has released the second single "Demons Don’t Sleep." A one-man band in every sense, Connolly played everything on the track; synthesizers, guitars, bass, keys, and backing vocals except for the drums, which were handled by producer Dan Doherty. Recorded at Dublin's Darklands Studios (home to artists like Fontaines D.C. and Coolio), "Demons Don’t Sleep" brings together raw energy, gritty distortion, and angst-fueled lyrics.

"Demons Don’t Sleep" focuses on the perplexing phenomenon of dreams occurring within other dreams. Connolly delves into the frustrating experience of believing you've awoken, only to discover you're still in a dream, a common occurrence for many. The song captures a feeling of bewilderment and a longing to escape from a never-ending routine, reflecting how dreams can mix reality with fantasy. Connolly's lyrics create a strong sense of unease, with his guitar riffs and synthesizers heightening the suspense.

In terms of sound, "Demons Don’t Sleep" combines different influences, including alternative rock bands such as The Smashing Pumpkins and Helmet and more melodic groups like The Pixies and Fleetwood Mac. The track is driven by gritty, distortion-heavy guitars layered with melodic hooks, giving the song a compelling contrast between chaotic energy and more structured, melodic moments. Connolly's vocals bring an angsty edge, reminiscent of the raw vulnerability of bands like Idlewild and Deftones.

As the follow-up to his first single, "The Problem With Ghosts," Haha Hear Hear's latest release continues to showcase Connolly’s talent for crafting energetic, emotionally resonant music. The session at Darklands Studios resulted in songs that feel urgent and cathartic, capturing the frustration and uncertainty that come with both dreams and real-life struggles.

Connolly’s return to music after a break is proving to be an exciting venture. His ability to combine introspective lyrics with heavy, distortion-driven instrumentals makes "Demons Don’t Sleep" a standout track. With more singles in the works, Haha Hear Hear is establishing itself as a powerful force in the indie rock scene, promising plenty of high-energy, angst-filled tunes to come.
