Carl Liungman's "Change": An in-depth examination of hope, renewal, and loss

Swedish musician Carl Liungman is back with his third neoclassical piano album titled Change, featuring nine original pieces that are skillfully composed. Change, launched by Caliu Piano, showcases Liungman's unique mix of classical skill and New Age vibes, drawing inspiration from well-known composers like Arvo Pärt, Hans Zimmer, Nils Frahm, Riopy, and Keith Jarrett. The live album, captured at the Malmö Art Museum in May 2024, provides a personal and intimate perspective on the constantly changing scenery of life.

The main focus of the album, which is change, is something that everyone can relate to and it is personal, as Liungman explores deep emotions related to loss, getting older, and starting anew. The compositions are emotionally influenced by the recent global challenges and the loss of his parents. In addition to the sadness, the album also contains instances of affection and positivity, reflecting the fine line between despair and hope. The music reflects the intricate emotions felt while navigating life changes.

Liungman incorporates a Steinway grand piano to provide a vibrant, traditional sound that is both clear and expressive. The first song establishes the mood with a melodic, contemplative piece that evokes a meditative journey through grief. As the album continues, every piece develops like a fresh section in an intimate story. Liungman is a masterful pianist technically, but it is his emotive touch that truly grips the listener. He lets the music have space to pause, leading to quiet reflection before moving on to more energetic, fluid sections.

The key difference between Change and Liungman's previous works, like his dynamic first book Born (2020), is its maturity and introspective nature. Change, which was made in the studio of ABBA’s Benny Andersson with a Fazioli grand piano, has a more natural, unprocessed sound compared to Born.

Change highlights his diverse abilities as a composer. While mainly focused on solo piano, his experience with chamber music, jazz, and pop genres shapes his compositions, giving them a diverse and complex nature. The music seamlessly combines classical and contemporary elements, appealing to both traditional classical music enthusiasts and modern neoclassical fans.

'Change' is a deep and emotionally impactful album that contemplates the unavoidable changes in life. The album's intricately crafted piano compositions, filled with melody and emotion, encourage listeners to delve into topics of loss, rebirth, and optimism. Liungman's exceptional skills in music production, coupled with his talent for portraying profound feelings, sets Change apart in the neoclassical category and is essential for those looking for comfort and contemplation through music.
